NHL playoffs: Rangers vs. Lightning odds, prediction for today’s Game 5

The Tampa Bay Lightning have turned the tables on the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Final. After going down 2-0 in Game 3 and facing a potential 0-3 deficit in the series, Tampa Bay has roared back to win both contests at Amalie Arena to knot the best-of-7 at two games apiece.

Despite the fact that the Rangers have a home-ice advantage in two of the possible three remaining games in this set, it is the Lightning who are now -165 favorites to win the series.

Tampa currently sits at -130 to win Game 5, which is where they closed for Game 2. In other words, there has yet to be too much of a market reaction off of the impressive wins in Games 3 and 4. Part of the lack of movement from Game 2 to Game 5 could be chalked up to New York’s eight-game winning streak at home, so bettors could end up paying a bit of a premium at Madison Square Garden.

While the Rangers have been much better at home, this is now the third series in a row where the Blueshirts have been out-chanced at 5-on-5. Tampa Bay and New York have played nearly 200 minutes at 5-on-5 this series, and while the Rangers have outscored the Bolts, 8-6, in that span, Tampa holds a 54-32 edge in high-danger scoring chances and a +4.26 expected goal differential.

Getting outplayed at 5-on-5 is nothing new for the Rangers, who were able to rely on their goaltending advantage and power play to beat Pittsburgh and Carolina, but the Lightning are proving to be a different beast. Not only does Tampa Bay also have one of the best goaltenders on the planet, but the Bolts’ power play can at the very least keep pace with a Rangers unit that is clipping at 32.7% this spring.

Creating offense on the power play is not an issue for the Rangers, but it’s a different story at even strength. The Blueshirts haven’t scored a 5-on-5 goal since Game 2 and have created just 11 high-danger scoring chances at 5-on-5 over the last two games.

The job could get harder for New York on Thursday night as Ryan Strome and Filip Chytil are both questionable to play. If Strome and Chytil can’t go, that means that two of the Rangers’ top three lines will be missing their centers, and their first power-play unit will be missing a key contributor.

With Strome and Chytil at the very least operating below 100% and the Lightning rounding into defensive form, it’s pretty easy to see how this game turns into a rock fight.

After a slow start to the series, Andrei Vasilevskiy has found his game opposite Igor Shesterkin, who continues to play at an elite level. With the goaltending matchup looking like a blockbuster and the Rangers offense compromised, this game should be pretty tight.

Improved puck management has helped the Bolts fight back to level series

Tampa Bay hasn't allowed a 5-on-5 goal in the last two games and significantly cut down on turnovers

The Tampa Bay Lightning will battle the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final tonight at 8 p.m. ET at Madison Square Garden.

Whoever wins Game 5 will take a 3-2 series lead and have an opportunity to close out the series at AMALIE Arena on Saturday night and punch a ticket to the 2022 Stanley Cup Final.

Tampa Bay will be without Brayden Point for the ninth-straight game tonight as he continues to recover from a lower-body injury that he suffered in Game 7 of the First Round against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"If he plays, he's going to be ready to play," said Lightning head coach Jon Cooper on Thursday morning. "He's not ready to play right now."

After winning the previous two games in the series, the Bolts feel like they've found a recipe to defeat a strong Rangers team. Now, it's about going out and executing on the road in a loud environment.

"I've said this before, that's got to be white noise to us," Cooper said. "We have a plan and we need to go execute. The Rangers are in the way of that and they're going to try and disrupt things we want to do.

"How are we going to fight through that? Are we going to stick to what we know has worked? Are we going to be able to fight through checks? Are we going to be able to fight through the crowd noise?

"Those are things that, if you want to win the Stanley Cup, you have to do."

After such a long layoff between the Second and Third Rounds of the playoffs, the Lightning started the Eastern Conference Final a little bit slow. Things were sloppy and uncharacteristic for a team chasing a third-straight Stanley Cup.

Tampa Bay won't use the long break as an excuse and it may actually help them in the latter half of this series. New York hasn't had the luxury of getting a break and, at this point, the Bolts probably have the fresher legs.

"When you take 10 days off, you're just not as sharp," Cooper said. "Not only your execution and your skill, but your mind is not there.

"Now, that wasn't the reason we turned it over all the time. The Rangers had something to do with it as well."

Limiting turnovers has been the key to the Lightning's turnaround after dropping the first two games of the series. The puck management has been significantly better. Breakouts have been crisper and less mistakes have been made.

Lightning vs Rangers Game 5 Picks and Predictions: Tampa Bay Brings Momentum to MSG

Despite each of the four games going to the home side and the series shifting back to Madison Square Garden, our NHL betting picks and predictions are backing the two-time defending champions and the momentum they built up in Games 3 and 4.

The Tampa Bay Lighting convincingly won Game 4 at home Tuesday and despite the Eastern Conference Final knotted at two games apiece, the New York Rangers have lost all the momentum.

However, the home side can push the Bolts to the brink of elimination with a win tonight at Madison Square Garden where the Rags are 8-1 straight-up in the playoffs.

Can the Rangers overcome some injuries to key players or has Andrei Vasilevskiy found another gear in the series? Find out in our free NHL picks and predictions for Lightning vs. Rangers.

The Rangers opened as high as +115 but have gained some confidence in the market and sit as +105 home dogs as of Thursday morning. New York closed as +115 moneyline underdogs in Games 1 and 2.

The total is also teetering on the precipice of 5.5 and 5 as it currently sits at -140 to the Under 5.5. Each game in this series has opened and closed at 5.5.

The Lighting knows a thing or two about Stanley Cups as they have won back to back. They will be looking to get to their third straight cup, while the Rangers will be looking to claim their first since the 1990s. The Rangers have been a surprise team all year, but now the world is aware of how good this team is. They have the best goalie in the NHL and have a lot of guys who have really stepped up this season.

The Rangers have been red hot on their home ice, and with a win tonight, they would tie the Penguins for the longest home win streak in playoff history. They have not lost a home game since they lost to the Penguins on home ice in round one. Tampa was able to take care of business on their home ice in Games 3 and 4. The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 3, but Tampa stormed back and now sets this up to be a best of three-game series. This should be another great game tonight!

I am backing the Rangers on the money line tonight. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it is my mindset here tonight. New York has been outstanding on their home playing in front of their home crowd. I expect the same exact thing tonight. Igor Shesterkin has played better hockey at home, and I believe we will see him dominant. This one tonight and give them a great chance to win this game tonight. If you are feeling bold, sprinkle the puck line because I do think they can win this one by a couple of goals tonight. Let’s stay hot!ghsfdgh
